In memoriam: Professor Anto Jonjić

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Anto Jonjić, MD, PhD, on 23 June.

Professor Jonjić graduated from the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine in 1963 and joined the Faculty in 1970, where he devoted much of his academic career to teaching and research in primary health care and social medicine. He was appointed Full Professor in 1990 and held several leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Social Medicine and Health Ecology, President of the Faculty Management Board, and Vice Dean for Education. Throughout his career, he supervised master’s theses and doctoral dissertations and led the postgraduate programme in social medicine and social psychiatry.

In 1996, Professor Jonjić was appointed Director of the Teaching Institute of Public Health of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. He authored 13 books, five book chapters, and more than 260 scientific papers, and presented his work at over 70 national and international scientific meetings. His research focused primarily on addiction, particularly tobacco smoking. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Medal of Faculty of Medicine in 1986.
