The university specialist study of Gynecology and Obstetrics aims to provide professional knowledge and modern scientific discoveries to the participants. In the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, which is the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, residents are trained to work in the CHC Rijeka and other state and private health institutions from the entire Republic of Croatia. This study enables an organised and systematic acquisition of knowledge in gynecology and obstetrics that participants will be able to include in their daily practice. The university specialist study of Gynecology and Obstetrics is a mandatory part of the specialist training programme that enables participants to take the specialist exam in gynecology and obstetrics. By passing the final specialist exam, participants acquire the title of gynecology and obstetrics specialist, which will enable them to work in their local community and the entire Republic of Croatia. The programmes and requirements of specialist training in gynecology and obstetrics are aligned with the requirements determined by the Croatian Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of the Croatian Medical Association and the Croatian Medical Chamber, which issues a license for independent work. Similar programmes are organised by the University of Zagreb under specialist studies of Perinatology and Ultrasound in Gynecology and Obstetrics. In addition, in terms of the programme scope and course schedules, the university specialist study of Gynecology and Obstetrics is similar to the Specialist study of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University of Siena, Italy.

This study programme was prepared to enable national and international student mobility, considering the existence of similar study programmes in Croatia, neighbouring countries and EU countries. This particularly applies to elective courses. Students from other faculties can attend certain elective courses from our study and vice versa – our students, according to their own wishes, can enrol in some elective courses at other higher education institutions. The Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka has the approval of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia to train and educate residents in gynecology and obstetrics, which is one of the strategic goals of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics as part of the strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka. The university specialist study of Gynecology and Obstetrics is a mandatory part of specialist education, and it is recommended that the institution launches it to realise the entire content of specialist training. It is organised as a one-year study conducted in two semesters with a total student load of 60 ECTS credits. The study is organised as a part-time study because, according to the Act on Health Care (Official Gazette 150/08) and the Ordinance on Specialist Training for Doctors of Medicine (Official Gazette 111/09), residents are required to attend theoretical classes in addition to professional work at the clinic.
