Molecular Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

The Molecular Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory performs the following activities:

  • analysis of changes in tumour tissue based on changes in the structure of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
  • mutations and deletions in the gene structure, gene amplifications, chromosome translocations and inversions
  • quantitative analysis of tumour clones to monitor treatment effectiveness
  • detecting viruses in inflammatory processes and carcinogenesis.

Materials for analysis:

  • tissue specimens (fresh, paraffin-embedded, from cytology slides)
  • samples of peripheral blood, plasma, serum
  • urine
  • cerebrospinal fluid
  • urogenital smears.

Service users:

The Laboratory provides services to healthcare institutions in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and polyclinics and doctor’s offices in the private sector.

Quality control and cooperation:

The Laboratory participates in quality controls organised by the German and Austrian Society of Pathology and professional institutions for control implementation (EMQN – European Molecular Genetics Quality Network).

Furthermore, the Laboratory collaborates with the following reputable laboratories for molecular diagnostics in the region:

  • Institute of Hygiene, Microbiology and Environmental Medicine, Medical University Graz, Austria (Prof. Harald H. Kessler)
  • Institute of Pathology, Department of Molecular Pathology Diagnostics, Medical University Graz, Austria (Prof. Gerald Hoefler)
  • Department of Hematology/Oncology, University of Bologna, Italy (Prof. Simona Soverini).
