Immunohistochemistry Laboratory

The Department of Pathology and Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka offers a wide range of immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining, mostly on paraffin-embedded (formalin-fixed) tissues, and, if necessary, on frozen tissue sections. The Immunohistochemistry Laboratory performs most of its work for diagnostic purposes. The Laboratory currently uses antibodies that recognise various cell, tissue, tumour and proliferation markers. These antibodies can detect tumour histogenesis, help in the analysis of reactive and neoplastic processes and enable the detection of numerous prognostic and predictive tumour factors that are listed in detail within the diagnostic procedures for individual organs. In addition to the aforementioned professional activity, the Laboratory also performs immunohistochemical staining for scientific research projects for the Department and numerous other associate institutions.

The Laboratory has a highly specialised staff of medical laboratory scientists who continuously undergo training in specialised immunohistochemistry laboratories in the country and abroad (Dako Training Center, Copenhagen, Denmark).

Since 2008, the Laboratory has been participating in the quality control of immunohistochemical staining by the independent scientific organisation NordiQC (Nordic Immunohistochemical Quality Control, Aalborg, Denmark). The Laboratory has a certificate of high-quality immunohistochemical staining for more than 50 primary antibodies, among which there are primarily those with the predictive significance of treatment response in certain malignant tumours.
