Medicina Fluminensis is the official journal of the Croatian Medical Association – Branch Office Rijeka and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka. The journal was launched in 1964 by the Croatian Medical Association – Branch Office Rijeka. During 2010, the journal changed its name to Medicina Fluminensis and started to be co-published by the Croatian Medical Association – Branch Office Rijeka and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka.
Medicina Fluminensis is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published in printed and electronic open-access issues four times a year. It publishes scientific papers from all areas of biomedical sciences, including clinical and basic research, public health, history of medicine, dental medicine, medical bioethics and medical education. The journal encourages and supports basic and clinical medical research and promotes excellence in medical education.
The entire journal is available for open access. The journal does not charge the authors for the publication of papers. The journal is printed with the support of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Rijeka, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Croatian Medical Union – Branch Office Rijeka. The printed edition of the journal is delivered to the members of the Croatian Medical Association – Branch Office Rijeka.
The journal is indexed in the SCOPUS database.

Student Section
In 2017, based on the interest and motivation of students at the First International Biomedical Student Congress in Rijeka (BRIK 2017), the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor initiated the establishment of the Student Section of Medicina Fluminensis. The main aim of the Student Section is to promote and support student scientific activity. The popularisation of science among students and their early integration into scientific activity certainly contributes to the quality and visibility of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka and the Croatian Medical Association – Branch Office Rijeka.
All goals of the Student Section are implemented based on the teamwork of the Editorial Board, two student representatives on the Editorial Board and students involved in the scientific programme of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.
The activities of the Student Section include:
- journal’s official support at all congresses organized by students of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, including reviewing abstracts and selecting the best paper, which will be published in extenso in the journal
- printing of abstracts from the BRIK congress in the journal supplement
- publishing scientific papers in the journal supplement dedicated to the Student Section
- launching the Medicina Fluminensis Scientific School for Students, which will include workshops dealing with topics related to writing scientific papers
By providing a unique approach to students, Medicina Fluminensis strives to become a promoter and a window into the world of science from the earliest student days, both at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka and at other faculties of biomedical sciences.
