Quality assurance

The quality assurance and improvement system of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka is based on principles, criteria and methods for planning, monitoring, evaluating and proposing measures to improve the system in accordance with the standards from the Act on Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education, Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, University of Rijeka Statute and Faculty of Medicine Statute. In addition to the Ordinance on Quality Assurance and Improvement System of the University of Rijeka and the Quality Assurance Manual of the University of Rijeka, the quality assurance and improvement system is also defined by the Ordinance on the Quality Assurance and Improvement System of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka and the Quality Assurance Manual of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka. The aim of the quality assurance and improvement system of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka is to continuously promote quality and build institutional mechanisms for systematic evaluation and coordination of initiatives and development programmes with the permanent purpose of quality assurance and improvement and promotion of high standards of professional development of students, teachers, associates, administrative and technical staff, administration, library staff and external associates in all Faculty’s domains. In accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka defined in the Strategic Development Plan of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka 2019–2025, the Faculty is committed to the continuous development of quality systems in all segments of its activity. The quality policy is based on:

  • continuous quality assurance and improvement system based on Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area and national, University’s and Faculty’s criteria
  • supporting the active participation of all organisational structures, students and external stakeholders in taking responsibility for quality in the fields of education, research, public function and organisation
  • creating a supportive environment to promote quality with an emphasis on academic integrity, ethics, responsibility and ensuring equal opportunities for all employees and students
  • developing partnerships with students, along with activities aimed at improving student standards and creating preconditions for encouraging student social activities
  • development and innovation of study programmes and lifelong learning programmes based on the results of scientific research and harmonised with the labour market needs and promotion of student-centred learning with a high level of achieved learning outcomes
  • strengthening the Faculty of Medicine as a dynamic research centre characterised by interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research projects and encouraging cooperation with national and international scientific and higher education institutions
  • greater mobility of students, teaching and non-teaching staff
  • continuous monitoring and improvement of educational, scientific research and professional activities to ensure continuous quality improvement and competitiveness of teaching, scientific and professional work and to enable knowledge transfer in practice
  • connecting teaching and research and strengthening the active role of the Faculty of Medicine in the development of its economy and community
  • continuous monitoring of work quality indicators and periodic revision of the quality policy and strategy of the Faculty of Medicine in accordance with the indicators
  • ensuring transparency, accountability and professionalism in all Faculty’s activities and domains.

Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee

The Committee includes and coordinates all activities related to the quality system. The role and composition of the Committee are stipulated by the Ordinance on the Quality Assurance and Improvement System of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.

Office of Student Affairs

In cooperation with the Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee, the expert advisor for Quality Improvement and Student Affairs from the Office of Student Affairs conducts quality assurance procedures at the Faculty. The expert advisor conducts analyses and collects information regarding quality from all relevant users and works closely with the University’s Centre for Quality Assurance and Improvement and the University’s Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee.
