The study is launched to fulfil the stipulated mandatory specialisation programme in clinical radiology at the Clinical Department of Radiology of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka. The study is intended for residents trained for the needs of the CHC Rijeka and other state and private health institutions in the Republic of Croatia. This university specialist study will enable residents to acquire knowledge about the latest options and methods in radiology and their application in clinical practice.
Radiological diagnostics and intervention are constantly growing, especially complex diagnostic tests, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance, and interventional procedures, which are connected with the technological progress of devices and interventional instruments/materials. The market needs undoubtedly indicate a long-term shortage of clinical radiology specialists. This university specialist study of Clinical Radiology is a mandatory part of the specialist training programme in clinical radiology, which enables participants to take the final specialist exam. By passing the exam, the participants are awarded the title of university master of clinical radiology, which will enable them to pass the specialist exam in clinical radiology and work in their local community, the Republic of Croatia and the European Union. Except in the public sector, many radiologists are employed in private polyclinics, and after passing the specialist exam, they acquire the conditions for opening their private practices and/or polyclinics.
The programmes and requirements of specialist training in radiology are aligned with the recommendations and requirements determined by the Croatian Society of Radiology of the Croatian Medical Association and the Croatian Medical Chamber, which issues a license for independent work. The study programme is also aligned with the specialist curriculum of the European Society of Radiology (Training Curriculum for Radiology, Level I+II), which is subject to continuous revision, supported by the Croatian Society of Radiology and launched to standardise education and increase the quality of specialisation in radiology at European level.
This study is aligned with the Strategic Development Plan of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka 2010–2015, which proposes drafting a joint specialisation plan for the Faculty of Medicine. The study is also aligned with the mission and strategy of the University of Rijeka 2014–2020 Strategy. It enables the CHC Rijeka (the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine and the main factor in the University Hospital concept accepted by the Senate of the University of Rijeka) to implement specialist training in radiology. The Department of Radiology of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka actively participates in organising and implementing the undergraduate courses Radiology for medicine students and Dental Radiology for dental medicine students. By acquiring the professional, scientific, spatial and personnel conditions, the Clinical Department of Radiology achieved the conditions and obtained the approval of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia for the training of residents in clinical radiology, which represents one of the strategic goals of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka as part of the strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka.
