TransMedRi Biobank
The TransMedRi Biobank was established on 1 August 2011 and represents the essential facility for translational research aimed at collecting, identifying and defining the nature and origin of biosamples for clinical studies.
The TransMedRi Biobank was initially funded within the project EU-FP7-REGPOT-2010-5 named “Upgrading the Capacities for Research in Translational Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka” (project acronym: TransMedRi), which created the prerequisites for the integration of the TransMedRi Biobank in the European network of biobanks (PATB network). TransMedRi Biobank is funded by donations and financial support for scientific research.
Under the leadership of Prof. Nives Jonjić, MD, PhD, the Department of Pathology and Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka is the founder of the TransMedRi Biobank.
The involvement of pathologists from the Department of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka in the founding of the TransMedRi Biobank is scientifically valuable and represents the intellectual property of the TransMedRi Biobank.
TransMedRi Biobank is organised into the following segments:
• breast cancer
• colorectal cancer
• melanoma
• lung cancer
• gynecological cancer
• hematological cancer
• urinary tract cancers and male reproductive system cancers
• head and neck cancers
• biosamples within research into spontaneous and medically induced abortions
• neuroendocrine cancer
• dento-oral and perioral biosamples.
The establishment of the TransMedRi Biobank was determined by ethical and legislative regulations (the Good Clinical Practice and the Declaration of Helsinki), such as obtaining informed consent from sample donors and providing information on the significance and purpose of the Biobank, as well as ensuring personal data protection for sample donors (Notice for participants, Informed consent). The Ethics Committee of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka (Krešimirova 42, Rijeka) and the Ethics Committee for Biomedical Research of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka (Braće Branchetta 20, Rijeka) approved the establishment and implementation of the TransMedRi Biobank project, as well as all its segments.
