The Virtual Microscopy Laboratory of the Department of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka enables the digitisation of microscopy slides (Olympus Slide Scanner) and their use on computers for online diagnostics, counselling and education. It includes a system for automated quantification of immunohistochemical stainings (Alphelys Spot Browser 2) and a system for tissue microarray construction (Alphelys MTA Booster).
The Department of Pathology also has a laser microdissection device (PALM® MicroLaser Systems, Carl Zeiss), which enables the separation of specific cell populations under a microscope to obtain a histologically clean specimen. Laser microdissection does not damage the tissue and is suitable for archival paraffin-embedded material, cell cultures, frozen tissue, peripheral blood smears and cytological material. The specimens obtained in this way can then be used for DNA, RNA or protein analyses.
