About the Centre
The European Development Strategy until 2020 is based on smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Smart growth implies the development of regional strategies that include the best possible use of all resources and connecting the public sector with knowledge centres. Since their establishment, the University of Rijeka and the Faculty of Medicine have supported and promoted maritime orientation as a tradition of our region, geographical and economic specificity and possible comparative advantage of the University. The establishment of the Centre for Research and Education in Undersea, Hyperbaric and Maritime Medicine ensured institutional support for maritime orientation by gathering people, ideas, projects and knowledge. By financing, building and equipping the Department of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and organising a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and technicians, the CHC Rijeka created the prerequisites for treatment and professional activity in the field of undersea and hyperbaric medicine. The establishment of the Centre yielded a new dimension, professional profiling, continuous growth in quality, competition and international competitiveness, as well as upgrading through scientific research and education.
The Centre’s activities are aimed at improving and popularising education in undergraduate and postgraduate medical studies, the education of divers and the general population and the education of physicians, nurses and technicians. The Centre’s activities are directed towards realising scientific and development projects of strategic interest for the local community and integrating research policy that encourages economic development based on knowledge and sustainable development.
The main goal is to gather all interested experts, scientists, teachers and medical students at the level of the University of Rijeka, national and international levels, and to provide an institutional framework for scientific research, professional development and education in undersea, maritime and hyperbaric medicine.
