English as a Medium of Instruction in Higher Medical Education

COURSE AIMS

The course aims to develop English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for medical teaching. Given that successful teaching in English language requires a high level of proficiency in speech production and speech interaction, this course is aimed at developing academic discourse, fluency and accuracy and linguistic (self)awareness. Also, the goal of the course is to raise teachers’ awareness of the importance of three groups of EMI skills in higher medical education: linguistic, methodical and intercultural competencies.

Important notice: this course is not aimed at developing medical discourse or medical English.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

The course is intended for teachers who teach or will teach in English language and who want to improve their linguistic, methodical and intercultural competencies.

COURSE CONTENT
• elements of English as a medium of instruction
• encouraging and developing fluency, accuracy, spontaneity and automaticity in (academic) English language
• paraphrasing to improve comprehension and elaboration of content
• preparing and delivering a 20-minute lecture/lesson in English language
• self-reflection and collaborative reflection
• methodical and linguistic aspects of teaching classes
• intercultural communication using English as a medium of instruction

IMPLEMENTATION AND DURATION OF THE COURSE

The course consists of 18 class hours and will be held onsite at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka from 15 May to 2 June 2023 according to the following schedule:

  • from 15 to 19 May 2023
    • 15 May – from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm – introduction to the course and presentation of the TAEC EMI Handbook, 2019
    • two days of three-hour sessions from 4:00 pm to 6:15 pm
  • from 22 to 26 May 2023
    • two days of three-hour sessions from 4:00 pm to 6:15 pm
  • from 31 May to 2 June 2023
    • two days of three-hour sessions from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm

COURSE PRICE

The course is free of charge for teachers of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka. In the case of subsequent enrolment in the lifelong learning programme Modern and Practical Medical Education, the course passed will be recognised as a passed elective course worth 1.5 ECTS credits.


ENROLMENT IN THE COURSE

The Call for applications for enrolment in the course will be open from 24 to 28 April 2023 at 4 pm. The minimum number of participants is 10 and the maximum number is 12. In the case a large number of participants apply, the advantage will be given to participants who are less experienced in the EMI classroom and those who have not yet completed a course/program/workshop aimed at improving EMI skills.
