The university specialist study is a mandatory organised theoretical education as part of the specialist training programme in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine. In the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, which is the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, residents are trained for the needs of the CHC Rijeka, as well as other state and private health institutions in the entire Republic of Croatia. This study offers an organised and systematic acquisition of theoretical knowledge in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine. The university specialist study of Anesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine is a mandatory part of the specialisation programme in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine stipulated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia. It allows participants access to the final specialist exam in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine. After passing the final specialist exam, participants are awarded the title of anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine specialist, which enables them employment throughout Croatia.
This university specialist study programme includes the catalogue of theoretical knowledge in the fields of anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine prescribed by the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESC Core Curriculum for the Anesthesiologist) and is fully compatible with similar postgraduate specialist studies from many European universities. This study programme was prepared to enable national and international student mobility, considering the existence of similar study programmes in Croatia, neighbouring countries and EU countries. This applies to all courses. Students from other faculties can attend certain courses from our study and vice versa – our students, according to their own wishes, can enrol in some courses at other higher education institutions.
This study is aligned with the University of Rijeka 2014–2020 Strategy. Also, the study enables health institutions that are teaching hospitals of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka full accreditation to conduct specialist training in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine for its employees and physicians from other health institutions in the Republic of Croatia. The Department of Anesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka organises and conducts numerous compulsory and elective courses for most of the university and professional study programmes of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka. The Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the CHC Rijeka has the approval of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia to conduct the specialist training programme in anesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care medicine, which represents an important strategic goal of the Department as part of the strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka.
