This study was initiated because there was a need for specialist postgraduate education for residents studying to work at the CHC Rijeka and numerous other state and private health institutions. In order for specialist physicians trained within the framework of CHC Rijeka, which is the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, to acquire knowledge of the possibilities of modern medicine upon completion of the specialisation, the university specialist study must enable modern scientific discoveries to incorporate it into clinical practice in the most acceptable way. This study is comparable to similar programmes conducted as part of theoretical teaching at medical higher education institutions in Europe. It is a one-year part-time study lasting three semesters, each worth 20 ECTS credits (a total of 60 ECTS).

Upon completion of this study, the students acquire competencies that, thanks to the theoretical basis, enable a quality approach to the pediatric patient, and within the framework of the study, provide the knowledge and skills necessary for clinical work as a general pediatrician. Specific competencies refer to individual courses in terms of acquiring scientific and professional discoveries in a particular field. After completing the study and other specialisation programmes and passing the final specialist exam, the participant is awarded the title of pediatric specialist. There is a continuous need for this specialist study because it enables us to conduct a specialisation programme in pediatrics within our Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka and our teaching bases, i.e., our personnel and facilities. Thus, we help solve the shortage of specialist physicians.
