The university specialist study of Medical Oncology is a mandatory part of the specialisation training programme in medical oncology stipulated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia. The Clinic for Radiotherapy and Oncology of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka has the approval of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia for conducting specialisation training in internal oncology in half of their residency service, which is one of the strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka. The specialist study of medical oncology is a mandatory part of specialist education, and it is recommended that the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka launches it to realise the entire content of specialist training. After the fulfilment of their residency service, the medical oncology specialist can obtain approval to complete the entire service in medical oncology. The study allows participants access to the final specialist exam in medical oncology. After passing the final specialist exam, participants are awarded the title of medical oncology specialist, which enables them employment throughout Croatia.
This is a one-year study that lasts three semesters. The study is organised as a part-time study because, according to the Act on Health Care (Official Gazette 150/08) and the Ordinance on Specialist Training for Doctors of Medicine (Official Gazette 111/09), residents are required to attend theoretical classes in addition to professional work at the clinic. The programmes and requirements of specialist training in medical oncology are aligned with the requirements determined by the Croatian Society of Medical Oncology of the Croatian Medical Association and the Croatian Medical Chamber, which issues a license for independent work. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia issues approval for specialisations in medical oncology based on the conditions specified in the Ordinance on Specialist Training for Doctors of Medicine (Official Gazette 111/09) and according to the current National Programme that approves a certain number of specialisations from a certain branch of medicine.
