The university specialist study of Ophthalmology is necessary for medical specialists to acquire knowledge about the latest methods of modern professional and scientific medicine in the field of ophthalmology.
The university specialist study of Ophthalmology is a mandatory part of the specialist training programme that enables participants to take the specialist exam in ophthalmology. By passing the final specialist exam, participants acquire the title of ophthalmology specialist, thanks to which they can work in their local community and the entire Republic of Croatia.
In the Special Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost, Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka, specialist training is attended by residents trained to work at the Special Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost and other health institutions as well as cooperating institutions in Croatia and the region (Clinic Svjetlost in Banja Luka, General Hospital Meljine etc.). This university specialist study enables medical specialists to acquire knowledge about the latest methods of modern professional and scientific medicine in the field of ophthalmology and their application in everyday clinical practice. This university specialist study programme is prescribed by the Ordinance on Specialist Training for Doctors of Medicine as a mandatory part of specialist education and is a requirement for passing the specialist exam in ophthalmology. Special Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost – Clinic for Ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka actively participates in the organisation and implementation of undergraduate courses Corneal Transplant and Eye Banking and Refractive Eye Surgery, as well as the university specialist professional study of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb.
In 2007, the Special Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost received the approval of the Ministry of Health to conduct ophthalmology specialisations, which represents one of the strategic goals of the Special Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost as part of the strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka. The proposed specialist study of ophthalmology is a mandatory part of specialist education, and it is recommended that the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka launches it to realise the entire content of specialist training. By opening business units outside of Croatia and collaborating with similar health institutions in the region, physicians abroad can also get the opportunity for specialist training.
