Study programme in Biomedicine
The purpose of this doctoral study is to provide quality scientific education to university researchers. Upon completion of their studies, researchers will be trained to set and solve scientific tasks, write a scientific project, organize a research group, manage a scientific project and present a scientific paper. In addition, the aim of this study programme is to educate scientists who will work in biotechnology institutes, modern pharmaceutical companies and galenic laboratories in the public and private sectors. Upon completion of their studies, they will be qualified to lead scientific projects independently and form the nucleus of gathering research groups. This study programme is also intended for medical doctors, especially those from clinical and hospital institutions. Besides the organisation of a full-time study programme (6 semesters), a part-time study programme (10 semesters) is also planned, which enables medical doctors to master in parallel the doctoral study programme and the professional, specialist training programme, as well as a better understanding and implementation of new technologies, further scientific and teaching career advancement and the possibility to establish and lead research groups at clinics. The doctoral study can be enrolled by graduates from the field of biomedicine and health (all fields and branches), natural sciences (biologists, biochemists, chemists) and certain social sciences (psychologists, special education teachers, bioethicists).
This doctoral study programme is equivalent and analogous to corresponding study programmes in most Western European countries. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka has been organising postgraduate training for over 40 years. Our past experiences in postgraduate education indicate that there is a need to change the study programme to increase the interdisciplinarity and collaboration of studies and to enable additional scientific training of students at other scientific institutions.
The study will be open to foreign and domestic universities by obligating students to perform part of their scientific research in another laboratory.
